Review: Maxi Gamer Xentor 7.21.99
By: Jarret Griffis

With so many different graphics cards available, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, it’s hard to find out how each will perform under certain conditions.  So, in order to facilitate every card equally, Cool Info has revamped its testing methods.  A few extra benchmarking programs, as well as games have been added to the list in order to give you a better idea of how an accelerator will perform under adverse conditions.  The test suite currently includes Quake 2, the test version of Quake 3,Tirtanium, and 3DMark '99 MAX.

    Quake 2
Quake 2 (version 3.20) was ran with its default settings.  Sound was left on, and 8-bit textures were off.  Demo1.dm2, Crusher, and Massive1 timedemos were ran a total of three times, with the third and final score being recorded.

    3DMark '99 MAX
3DMark 99 MAX was used to test the overall capabilities of the graphics accelerator.  Default settings were used.  The program was looped two times, with the highest score being recorded.

    Tirtanium

Tirtanium was ran in all resolutions two times, with the highest scores being kept.  The benchmark was ran using Direct 3D rendering; no settings were modified.  We tested in both 16 and 32-bit color modes.

    Quake 3

In Quake 3, we went through all detail levels, substituting the 512X384 resolution found in Fast and Fastest detail levels with 640X480.  Q3testdemo1 and demo2 were ran a total of three times, with the final score being taken.

    Test Rig Specifications:

    Intel Pentium II 450
    64 Megabytes of RAM
