Mystique G200 Review |
When the name Matrox is mentioned, people think 2D. For years now, Matrox graphics corporation has been at the top of their game when it comes to raw 2D performance. However, their attempts at gracing the world with a 3D solution have been fruitless and uninspired, leaving the gap open for powerhouses such as nVidia to steal the spotlight from the once untouchable Matrox Corp.
Two years ago, Matrox released their first 2D/3D solution, the Mystique. At the time of the cards release, the industry was going through a transitional phase that included high-performance graphics and enhanced 3D features. While the Mystique could certainly hold its own performancewise, offering excellent 2D and above average 3D, the cards visual quality proved to be lack-luster when compared to the offerings of Rendition and 3Dfx at the time.
Fast forward to May 1, 1998; the day that Matrox first announced their MGA-G200 series of graphics accelerators. The initial press release stunned many as Matrox unveiled performance numbers that could inevitably challenge the 3Dfx Voodoo II, and once again make Matrox a household name.
One card that incorporates the awe-inspiring capabilities of the G200 chip is Matrox's Mystique G200. Trying to undo the bad name left with the previous Mystique series, the companies latest addition to the family is promising to be a full-fledged multimedia solution. Sporting a high quality TV-Out, top notch 2D and a full 3D feature set, Matrox has shown the world that they are locked, loaded and hunting for bear.
