From the moment you see the box on the store's shelf, you know that this is going to be one good game. Along with the game you get a nice pewter pin of the UO logo and a cloth map of the world of Britannia in the tradition of the previous Ultima games. And like the title implies, this game is solely an online game, and if you want to read up on how to play the game or about the many items, skills, or other aspects, you have to open your browser to Ultima's website. The documentation that comes in the box doesn't tell you much other than the basics. When you start a character, there are several different servers to create one on. The first server on the list that comes up is generally the closest to you, thus making it (supposedly) the fastest. On each server you can create up to five different characters, but only one of them may be used at a time. And if the server you usually use is down for some reason, you can always start other characters on different servers. Creating your own character is pretty simple. You can choose a template of many different occupations (i.e. blacksmith, warrior, thief, etc.) or determine the strength, dexterity, and mana that you want your character to have. You can also choose your hairstyle, hair color, skin color, and the basic skills you want. When you start the game, your character will have items determined by the skills that you choose (which is usually not much). You start out with 100 gold and get to spend it however you want. The best thing to do would be to buy some type of armor or weapon. The best way to make money is to kill small animals and sell their hide and meat. Or if you feel bold, run over to the nearest cave and look for treasures in their depths. But whatever you do is up to you. There is no set plan as in other games. You don't have to do anything in a particular order, fight certain monsters, or find some lost artifact. You can make your own destiny. Some people say to truly enjoy the game, you should really role-play your character. For example, if you are a carpenter, make your living making things out of wood. But it's also fun to run around the wilderness killing random animals and creatures. Most people start as warriors, swordsmen, or mages, and they have an advantage over others when it comes to fighting. And there will probably be a time when you wished you had a lot of skill at it. There are numerous player killers (those who kill other players, usually for fun) and they go after anyone for no other reason than being an annoyance, an annoyance that will likely make anyone very upset, since when you die, whoever is around you can pick up anything you were wearing or carrying. Dying isn't that bad, overall. You get the option of either resurrecting on the spot losing a percentage of some of your skills, or playing as a ghost. As a ghost you can run around without being attacked by anything (obviously) and walk through doors. That's about it. The reason you would want to play as a ghost is simply so you don't have to lose those skill points that you worked so hard to raise. The way to come back to life is to visit a shrine, see a healer, or ask a very high level mage to resurrect you. But make sure you don't spend too long as a ghost or your skills will start to degenerate. Since this is an online game, there are many, many people playing all the time. This causes server lag, where the game will get really slow and sporadic. The times this happens most is at places where there are a lot of player characters gathered, such as at the bank, or other well-used stores. And even when there's no one around, you may still experience some lag. But after a while, you'll probably get used to it. The graphics are nothing special; it looks like many rpg's using a ¾ overhead view. But the graphics don't really matter that much in this game. It's a fun game to play, one that you will get addicted to and spend endless hours online playing. So go ahead and get it…and make a name for yourself in the land of Britannia.
